Gallipoli

The name Gallipoli derives from an ancient Greek word and means “beautiful city”. And this is very true of this city that looks out over the Ionian Sea, which has a grace and beauty of a different time period. Gallipoli is located on top of a promontory on a small island stretched into the Ionian Sea. Discovering this enchanting town of fishermen, which has become a true paradise for international tourists, means passing through the characteristic alleyways, stopping at typical inns, and taking a few pictures of the beautiful port. The historical centre, is located on calcareous island that is connected to the mainland by an arched bridge (whose arches remember a school of dolphins) from the 1600s. The most important monuments of Gallipoli include the Angioino Castle, the Cathedral of S. Agata, and the so-called Greek Fountain, which is from the 16th century but has Hellenistic inspirations.

Festivities

For those who love traditional festivities, the most important religious and civil festival during the summer in Gallipoli is the “Festa di Santa Cristina”. The festivities begin with the welcoming gunshots on the morning of the 23rd of July. During the entire duration of the festivities you will find a traditional market in the evening on the main street of Gallipoli where it is possible to purchase excellent handmade items and typical local specialties. Make sure not the miss the 24th, which features the game of the cuccagna in the sea. This is an ancient tradition of Gallipoli which consists of climbing across a wooden pole that is laid horizontally in the sea (in the port area). The pole is completely covered with animal fat and at the end there is a tricoloured crossbar. The object of the game is to try to make it to the crossbar without falling into the water (which is quite difficult thanks to the slippery fat). This game is extremely fun to watch. Another event not to miss is the celebration of the holy week, around Easter, which features the procession of the “Misteri”, and the floggers on Holy Friday, which follow the simulacrum of Christ.

Nardò

The history of Nardò is surrounded by legend. It is believed that this city was built on a terrain where a bull had sprouted water by touching the terrain with his hoof. The ancient cathedral is particularly beautiful, which is also decorated with a baroque façade. The nearby Church of San Domenica is worth a visit, and then go on to the Piazza Salandra, which is the main gathering point of the city. Besides the fascinating monuments found in this city, Nardò offers to its tourists an uncontaminated, beautiful, and wild nature. The area of Porto Selvaggio, with its inlets and Mediterranean pines, features an extremely clean sea with a beautiful climate all year round and a sun-soaked summer. Near Santa Caterina and Santa Maria al Bagno the cliffs become smoother and easier to cross. Both of these areas were once resorts for the rich of Nardò, and you can still see exemplars of the beautiful villas from the 1800s. There is still an authentic atmosphere of the past that is enjoyed by tourists. Also Porto Cesareo, located just a few Km. north of Nardò, is a wonderful town where you can stroll through the streets discovering small stores and restaurants on the sea. Along the coast of Porto Cesareo, just like in Nardò, you will see various lookout towers, like the Cesarea Tower, the Lapillo Tower, and the Chianca Tower, which are all well conserved and located in striking areas.
