Tuscany - Montepulciano PDF Print E-mail
Montepulciano

Located in Valdichiana, Montepulciano is a suburb rich with history and art. The main piazza, Piazza Grande, holds artwork of the best Renaissance artists of Florence, and it is here where the Palazzo Comunale (municipal building) was built, which is similar to the Palazzo della Signoria in Firenze and the Palazzo Cantucci, and was created by Antonio da Sangallo il Vecchio and finished by Baldassarre Peruzzi. The cathedral conserves a triptych by Taddeo di Bartolo.
Shopping
You can take a pleasurable walk down the main street, which is full of stores and workshops that offer local food specialties, especially the excellent wine Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. There are, in fact, numerous wine shops where you can purchase bottles, as well as visit the production and storage rooms. We will speak about this in further detail in the article dedicated to wine from Siena.
Museums
The civic museum of Montepulciano is located on Via Ricci, and merits a visit due to its large selection of artwork. Palazzo Ricci was built by Baldassarre Peruzzi and holds the library. After a short walk, you will ar- rive in Piazza delle Erbe. There are numerous patrician residences (from the ‘500s) along this street, like Palazzo Cervini and Palazzo Gagnoni-Giugni (created by Vignola). At the end of this street is where you will find the birthplace of the poet, famous during the ‘400s, Poliziano.
Dining
At the end of your visit we suggest that you make a stop in order to try the local specialties. There are many high-quality restaurants to choosefrom. We suggest the restaurant Il Marzocco, a family-run business, which offers typical Tuscan dishes, as well as a wine shop and bar. You can also find typical Tuscan dishes in the restaurant Il Cantuccio, located in Via delle Cantine, 1.

The Church of San Biagio

Erected near the town of Montepulciano, the church of San Biagio is a perfect example of architecture in the form of a Greek cross, which was built by Antonio da Sangallo il Vecchio. The church holds a large amount of books that catalogue the Renaissance.
