The Province of Fermo was constituted by Italian law in 2004 and is the fifth province of the Marche Region. The administrative center will be the city of Fermo. Other major cities are Porto Sant'Elpidio, Porto San Giorgio, Sant'Elpidio a Mare, and Montegranaro. At the 2001 census the 40 comuni that are planned to comprise the new province had a population of 166,218 inhabitants.
